Building Stars began in the early 2010s as an independent industrial rock solo project by Matt Gruber. 2016 saw the release of their self-titled debut album 'Building Stars.' This sci-fi/horror concept record was the only to be released entirely as a solo project.
In 2018 the band would grow into a duo with the release of their second full-length album, 'Outliars.' Liz Gimbutas was brought on to slowly take over lead-vocal duties. Departing from a narrative concept, this album instead was a re-imagined, resurrection of demos and b-sides from previous projects.
Building Star's third album, 'mEnd', was originally released as a 4-track EP and re-released in 2021 as a full-length piece. The album is a real-life, painful diary, detailing every moment of starting life over. It floats back and forth on a river of trip-hop, synth-pop, industrial, and alternative rock. During the recording of this album, the idea of taking Building Stars live to the stage saw the addition of Corrie Nelson on live keyboards and Will Heinemann Johnson on live drums.
Building Stars released 'Almost Live In A Dying World' in early 2023, which was recorded in several sessions during band rehearsals, in their rehearsal space. Featuring a selection of songs off their first two albums, this 'almost live' time-capsule was intended to be the set list of their debut live show. The delay of the pandemic and newer material ultimately led to several songs being retired from the set.
