Butchie

BUTCHIE is the music project of designer, poet, and thinker Matthew Waldman, whose life bridges raw New York energy with global artistic exploration. Shaped by NYC’s turbulent, creative late ’70s and ’80s.

In 2025, BUTCHIE releases newly recorded works set to lyrics Matthew wrote during his early twenties, illuminating the queer underground of 1980s New York. These songs move through time, retaining the imprint of desire, memory, and transformation—desires becoming impressions, words, drawings, and ultimately poetry filtered through the lens of experience.

Musically, BUTCHIE operates in the realm of post-industrial dream-pop—minimal rhythms, atmospheric synths, and percussive flourishes that evoke a decaying urban environment. Vocals hover in a space between detachment and vulnerability, brushing against myth and memory rather than recalling confessional narrative. The result is neither nostalgia nor pure invention: it is intertextual time travel, sculpting images from longing, tension, and the textures of a lost city teetering at the cusp of change.

BUTCHIE’s work reframes queer memory—not as nostalgia, but as an ongoing act of creative synthesis, blending shadow, surface, and synthetic sound into a vibrant, ever-evolving whole. Each track offers a condensed world: mythic, muscular, refracting personal and communal histories as sonic art.
