Call Me Ann: The Ann Richards Rock Opera tells the life of legendary Texas governor Ann Richards, through a feminist punk rock lens. The show is 100% sung by an all-female-identifying cast, who portray a colorful range of Texas political figures including Governor Ann, George W. Bush and Karl Rove. Narrated by famed political humorist Molly Ivins, the show positions Ann’s astonishing political rise, and her devastating gubernatorial loss, as an appeal to regular Americans to resist the apathy and cynicism that keep us from participating fully in local and national political life.
The show grew out of our love for Ann and her legacy. Jake Goldstein began writing tribute songs in 2016, and inviting fellow musicians Sam Cannariato, Kirk Suddreath and others to collaborate. Over the next three years, the project grew into a 60-minute concept album. In Spring 2019, producer and performer Alli Villines joined the project to develop it into a piece of musical theater. Megan Weaver joined that fall to direct a workshop production at the Houston Fringe Festival, where we enjoyed a sold-out run and rave audience reviews.
In 2020 we were awarded a grant from the Houston Arts Alliance to fund a full production. Of course the pandemic threw a wrench in that plan. So with HAA’s blessing, we decided instead to workshop the script, record a cast album and make a music video. The resulting script features 35 original songs, 18 of which you can listen to at the link above.
