Casual Crypt is one of several aliases used by California-based artist James Vernon, though it remains the most expansive and fully formed.
The project began with lo-fi cassette experiments and inward-facing psychedelia, gradually evolving into a more structured yet still exploratory form of instrumental electronic music. Drawing from a palette shaped by modular synthesis, drum machines, and analog tape, Vernon’s recordings feel tactile and quietly transportive.
Influenced in equal measure by the dreamlike progressions of Susumu Yokota, the sun-warped domesticity of Scott Gilmore, and the groove-forward minimalism of Benedek, Casual Crypt occupies a liminal space within experimental and electronic music — understated, melodic, and warm to the touch.
