Cathartes Aura’s self-titled sojourn is cleaved into four chapters: Origins, Contemplation, Sacrament, and Death. The Latin namesake for the Oregon six-piece is evident: the vulture is Death’s unashamed, winged black stomach. The phoenix always receives the glory for rising out of the ashes. But what shame is there in ashes? The lowly vulture basks in the carrion and flies on the side of the road as a conduit, from dust to dust. It’s clear from the first haunting notes of Origins that we’ll dwell restlessly in Contemplation, macerate in Sacrament, and dissolve excruciatingly in Death. At least there is beauty and purpose in being food for the vulture.
