Brooklyn-based outfit Chamber Band ascended to hipster notoriety in 2013 with the release of their debut album, <a href="spotify:album:02oWu4IQQoJgKnN5Pezl82" data-name="Deities">Deities</a>, eleven sugary songs about love and heartbreak that take place within the world of the popular tabletop roleplaying game Dungeons and Dragons.
While Chamber Band far from invented the nerd rock concept album, they infused it with a musical and lyrical seriousness rarely seen in the genre, drawing early comparisons to <a href="spotify:artist:7ITd48RbLVpUfheE7B86o2" data-name="The Decemberists">The Decemberists</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:0Q6X1jqwOVQuclYp2P1bub" data-name="Sondre Lerche">Sondre Lerche</a>, along with the usual shout outs to genre-starters such as <a href="spotify:artist:6zB02lwP6L6ZH32nggQiJT" data-name="They Might Be Giants">They Might Be Giants</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:3jOstUTkEu2JkjvRdBA5Gu" data-name="Weezer">Weezer</a>.
The comparisons didn’t really stick, however, as the band seemed fit to shrug off any kind of tidy compartmentalization with each new release, starting with 2015's <a href="spotify:album:5Rn08hk7RxG5OrJMcqW12j" data-name="Careers">Careers</a>, which infused songs written in the world of The Hunger Games with <a href="spotify:artist:2qFr8w5sWUITRlzZ9kZotF" data-name="Jefferson Airplane">Jefferson Airplane</a>-esque acid rock. Following that, songwriters <a href="spotify:artist:2OGK0y30fYE1PMlwhhd89v" data-name="Ellen Winter">Ellen Winter</a> and Chris Littler, along with a majority of the band, helped craft <a href="spotify:artist:1lZ55BBi0fylEBR9qOFk2x" data-name="36 Questions">36 Questions</a>, the landmark musical podcast starring <a href="spotify:artist:7KkqUt65v6LMtR369OQ6FB" data-name="Jonathan Groff">Jonathan Groff</a> that debuted in the summer of 2017.
Shortly after, the band released <a href="spotify:album:46m4eyuFozBcul45naGamM" data-name="Governor's Square">Governor's Square</a>, a short set of dark guitar-driven songs influenced heavily by <a href="spotify:artist:4MXUO7sVCaFgFjoTI5ox5c" data-name="Sufjan Stevens">Sufjan Stevens</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:5c3GLXai8YOMid29ZEuR9y" data-name="Nick Drake">Nick Drake</a>, and two novellas by science fiction author H.G. Wells.
