After leaving his touring band of 10 years “the slaughter house band” who enjoyed success playing headline shows and festivals across the UK and Europe, Charlie returned to his home island of Guernsey to start over again. Without a band for the first time in his adult life all Charlie had were his songs. These songs spring from the same well that purist songwriters such as Townes Van Zandt, Shane Macgowan and Bob Dylan drink from. Weaving simple melodies and prosaic lyricism with intricate folk inspired arrangements.

Things began to move again after Sherbournes songs caught the ear of traditional Irish folk fiddle player Andrew Degnen. The duo developed a strong bond over a mutual love of roots folk music and started working on arrangements of Sherbourne’s songs together at Apocalypse Studios and performing intimate live shows around the Channel Islands.

The Nightbirds line-up was completed when mandolin player James Dumbleton entered the frame bringing a virtuoso flair and a 3rd part vocal harmony as well as an ear for composition and arrangement. The trio wrote and recorded a batch of songs together through their own Howboy Cat Records label and are now set to hit the road across Europe and the UK in 2025.
