Chris Perez's world seemed to collapse, on March 31, 1995, as his wife and singer for his Tejano band Los Dinos, <a href="spotify:artist:6IE6z7DcZIT4Ml3Fh5Ivch">Selena</a> was murdered by the former president of her fan club, Yolanda Saldivar. After a period of mourning, <a href="spotify:artist:6nPiCm3jwXHrOsMbTDoc4E">Perez</a> made his return to music with a new Rock en Espanol group, the Chris Perez Band, featuring <a href="spotify:artist:3rhO3rDk432VyAwyZnkECs">La Mafia</a> bassist Rudy Martinez, former Los Dinos keyboardist <a href="spotify:artist:5bSNtUnYcIQiDwwCmXkHOV">Joe Ojeda</a>, vocalist John Garza and drummer Jesse Esquivel. The band's bi-lingual debut album, Resurrection, released in 1999, showcased <a href="spotify:artist:6nPiCm3jwXHrOsMbTDoc4E">Perez</a>'s songwriting with nine songs that he wrote or co-wrote with Ojeda. In a review of the album, the San Antonio Express News wrote, "the music is essentially dance-flavored, rock-fueled, popcraft spiced by blues, soul and folk."
