Formed in Indianapolis in 2019, Chromarama wasted no time making a name for themselves in their local scene with their kinetic flavor of metalcore. That year saw the release of their debut EP Not Dead Yet, and from 2020 to 2022 they dropped a slew of singles, some of which appeared on their seven-track Cruel Things EP. But 2023 was the year things changed.
Their third EP comprised three songs, cheekily titled III, and was their most self-assured, spacious material yet, a necessary step to get the band to where they are now. Following stints opening for heavy music luminaries like The Fall of Troy, Invent Animate, and Vatican, Chromarama are gearing up to drop their best material yet. The Culmination of Love Is Grief drops at the end of May. Their standalone single from January, “Dying for the Sake of It,” hinted towards this more confrontational approach, but even that song feels tame by the standards of the new EP.
The project’s caustic first single, “Another Sun,” dropped April 19, and succinctly lays out the rules of engagement. It’s a relentless, punishing song, and somehow it might be the softest track on the new EP. Expect fifteen minutes of brutal howls and in-your-face breakdowns, all coming to a head in the five-minute ender “Grin and Bear It,” a track that takes their hardcore proclivities into the stratosphere with a soaring chugging coda. The intention is clear: if you aren’t moving, you aren’t listening.
