Following the explorations of their recent mini-album Yucca, Church Andrews (aka Kirk Barley) and drummer Matt Davies return with a new two track release Aquilia. Once again employing a single synthesiser and acoustic drums, the duo continue to navigate the intersection of rhythm and synthesis, seamlessly blending the mechanical with the organic in their distinctive style. Aquilia follows Yucca (2024), Axis (2022), Pollen (2021) and Neighbours (2020).
Biography
Church Andrews & Matt Davies showcase a mutually informed conversation between live electronics and analogue percussion, where Andrews’s synth sounds and Davies’s drum performances respond to one another. The result is a series of sonic organisms—semi-mechanical ecosystems that click and whirr with subtle, shifting focuses. On a compositional level, the British duo often works with alternate tunings, employing just intonation or observed tunings derived from instruments and musical styles from around the world. Heavily experimenting with time signatures and morphing temporals, their minimal sound palette feels rhythmically and aesthetically diverse.
The duo has performed across the UK and Europe, playing festivals such as Rewire (NL), Waking Life (PRT) and Meakusma (BE) and iconic venues such as Cafe Oto and the ICA,. They have also filmed live performances for Fact Magazine, Worldwide FM, and Slate & Ash.
