Classically Contempo

Classically Contempo was born from two sisters’ love for rock and alternative music mixed with years of playing on traditionally classical instruments: the violin and piano.

Violinist Nina Lim provides a smooth and charismatic tone embellished with bursts of improvisation. She first began playing when she was six, serving as Concert Mistress throughout middle school before shifting her focus to percussion and choir in high school. Mikki Lim is a multi-instrumentalist who began studying piano and classical music when she was four years old. Her accompaniment is characterized by a distinct percussive approach, perfect pitch accuracy, and complex melodies.

Despite their years of classical training, Classically Contempo plays and arranges all their covers by ear. In 2016, they began recording piano and violin covers at home, gaining thousands of followers on Instagram and Youtube. They then progressed to playing at weddings, funerals, retirement homes, and events, most notably headlining for pianist Cecile Licad at San Francisco’s Herbst Theatre in 2016.

Although the duo does not produce any sheet music for their arrangements at this time, it is an important long-term goal for them. Back from a year-long hiatus, Nina and Mikki hope to keep playing and distributing music despite their busy schedules in college.

Above all, Classically Contempo strives to simply inspire others to practice and play music.
