b. USA. Clyde Lucas And His California Dons were formed in the early 30s. Lucas led the band from the front with his singing, sometimes alongside a vocal quartet named ‘Four Men Only’. The band was arranged with four saxophones, two trumpets and four rhythm players, and violins were occasionally included as well. Often musicians doubled up on different instruments to provide further flexibility. Their theme song was ‘Dance Mood’, and they recorded sparsely for Vocalion Records and Columbia Records. Most of their engagements were at hotels in California before they expanded their itinerary to take in the rest of America. Lucas also found extensive employment in the film industry, scoring and playing background music in some of the earliest films. By the late 40s, the group’s popularity was on the wane, as was the case with so many of the dance bands, and they ceased performing.
