From punk to banjo.
How did two punk rockers end up in a string band?
Don Pattimore ( lead vocals, guitar) and Naethon Pertelson ( vocals, banjo) were playing in a successful punk rock band when Naethon bought a banjo. Don had been writing songs that they thought would suit a banjo. That formed the seed that would become County 23, Alberta's only outlaw string band!
A chance meeting between Don and Brad Lundgren (vocals, mandolin) at a urinal added the third member.
The final piece for County 23 happened when Doug Gagnon (vocals, upright bass) joined the guys on stage for an impromptu jam.
The foursome was complete!
The Red Deer, Alberta based group played venues and festivals across Alberta, developing their music and growing a fan base. The gritty edge of punk rock still lingered combined with the grassroots string band sound, created a fresh, new audience experience.
The time had come to record an album. Don, being an excellent songwriter, composed the music and the band molded them into the unique County 23 sound. With the help of producer, Alen Christie, they recorded ten songs to make the self-titled new album. The band's future plans are to promote the music and perform their unique show.
