Coupleskate is an all-female indie rock band from Chicago that, in 2007, survived the tragic loss of its original bassist and drummer when they fell in love, married and moved away. Capitalizing on the opportunity to redefine its sound with a new rhythm section, Coupleskate has since taken a dramatic turn from gritty guitar-pop to dark, complex melodies and harmonies that meet the simplest rules of a really good bass line. The foursome's debut full-length album, Don't Scare the Horses, is a glimpse of a band poised to come into its own. Utilizing both traditional rock instrumentation and forward-thinking string arrangements, the album has both long-time and new-found Coupleskate fans raising their eyebrows—and turning up their receivers.
