Dakota Allyn is an alternative artist, musician, and actor from Southeast Georgia embarking on an individual side project after a decade of experimenting vocally with bands and projects in varying genres, including blues, punk, metal, indie, rock, new wave, and folk.
Her first release as a solo artist, ‘Undercut’, is an attempt at assigning a sound to the female experience, specifically that of a forgotten child made old by the world. The exploration follows a wrestle with self-empowerment, doubt and sabotage, sexuality, false-motherhood, failed and faltered love (not without hope, of course), a lost and re-gained childhood, morality and mortality, politics and the world’s influence, and the overwhelming sense of overthinking whilst trying to exist as a human on a plane that looks down on humanity.
Isolated vocals and an unplugged acoustic guitar, recorded and mastered by Anthony Stubelek, expose the usual throws of the transition from late adolescence into adulthood, focusing on the internalization of others’ projections that may culminate to a breaking point of the human condition. Complete with sarcastic coping mechanisms, a reversion to childlike wonder, distraction from a damning sense of burden by lust and bent reality, and a definitive realization of the fault in one’s intended ploy in life, ‘Undercut’ outlines five years of the twenty-something experience.
The beauty of it all: no one will think of it that deeply, thus confirming the sense of over-thought.
