New York-born modern composer and clarinetist Daniel Goode has composed innovative works for clarinet in addition to ensemble and multimedia works. Goode first studied philosophy, then music under such modern composers as <a href="spotify:artist:0AMoPrd9OLxMC38dQPnSQA">Henry Cowell</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:27RypxD9VhgrvCg9QePTLi">Pauline Oliveros</a>. He was Rutgers University's Director of the Electronic Music Studio from 1971 to 1998. In 1976, Goode joined <a href="spotify:artist:13KJGjpoBpIg09zHPQ4oMh">Gamelan Son of Lion</a>, as composer and performer, and in 1983, co-founded NY's DownTown Ensemble, which he co-directed from then on. His composed works have been performed throughout North America, Eastern and Western Europe, Japan and Australia at festivals including the 1991, '92 and '96 <a href="spotify:artist:7oWIf1AfunefF3puPqzTkQ">Bang On a Can</a> Festivals, and the 1994 Pfeifen im Walde festival in Berlin. In July 1996, Goode toured Java with <a href="spotify:artist:13KJGjpoBpIg09zHPQ4oMh">Gamelan Son of Lion</a>. The tour included the performance of his Eine Kleine Gamelan Music at the Second Yogyakarta International Gamelan Festival and recordings of Goode's gamelan works, Gamelan in the New World Vol. 1 & 2, can be found on the <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Folkways%22">Folkways</a> label. In 2004, Goode founded the Flexible Orchestra, an ensemble that tries to address issues of limited availability of musicians, instruments, or budget while maintaining the rich sound of a full orchestra. Other compositions of note include his pieces for solo clarinet, Circular Thoughts (1974) and Clarinet Songs (1979-91), which was released in 1993 on the Experimental Intermedia (<a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22XI%22">XI</a>) label; a work for solo bass recorder, Thrush From Upper Dunakyn, recorded for <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Opus+One%22">Opus One</a> records; and a piece for 15 instruments, Tunnel-Funnel, which was performed at the 1989 New Music America Festival and recorded for the <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Tzadik%22">Tzadik</a> label for 1996 release. Goode also has wrote From Notebooks and One PagePieces, which were published by New Hampshire's <a href="spotify:search:label%3A%22Frog+Peak+Music%22">Frog Peak Music</a>.
