Music was a constant in Ponder's life, but she spent her adult years as a lawyer focused on criminal justice reform. In 2021, at 39, she left law behind to pursue music full-time. The gamble paid off: she signed her first record deal in 2022. Her debut album Some of Us Are Brave introduced her as one of soul's most compelling new voices, earning major sync placements (including Apple's iPhone 16 Pro campaign), TV appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and sold-out shows at Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Afropunk, and Montreux Jazz Festival.
