b. Dennis Moss, 16 August 1927, Redhill, Surrey, England. By the late 40s tenor saxophonist Moss had established a reputation as an outstanding musician and was hired by many of the leading UK jazz and dance bands of the day, including those of Ted Heath, Oscar Rabin, Vic Lewis, John Dankworth and Humphrey Lyttelton. From the early 60s Moss led his own small groups, touring the UK and sometimes working with fellow UK musicians such as Sandy Brown and Dave Shepherd. Additionally, he was in great demand as an accompanist and featured soloist with visiting American artists, most notably with a succession of leading singers that included Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan and Rosemary Clooney. In 1990 Moss, whose wife is singer Jeanie Lambe, took up residence in Australia. In the summer of the same year he was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List. A committed jazzman, Moss’ distinctive playing style shows him to be at ease whether on up-tempo swingers, where his full-bodied sound is a delight, or on soulful ballads to which he brings great emotional depth.
