Dear Shirley is the solo project of Los Angeles-based artist Alex Lichtman. His music combines honest songwriting with textured, layered production.
Alex’s love for art and music started early, thanks to his grandmother, Shirley Lichtman—a pioneering sculptor and feminist artist who worked with metal in the 1960s. He played violin as a kid, dreamed of being a drummer, and started teaching himself guitar at 12. By 16, he was in garage bands, laying the foundation for a lifelong passion for music.
In 2015, he moved to Chicago to study audio design and production at Columbia College. There, he joined a band called Holler and immersed himself in the city’s punk and rock scenes. From basement shows to DIY venues, those years fueled his love for raw, honest music and collaboration.
After college, Alex worked in audio engineering and sound installation, quietly building toward his own solo project. That became Dear Shirley, named after his grandmother and her fearless creativity. His debut album, recorded with his friend Andrew Christopoulos at Soul Honey Records, is the result of years of writing, experimenting, and reconnecting with what made him fall in love with music in the first place.
