Denison Witmer is an American singer-songwriter known for his introspective folk music. Born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, he began his music career at 19 with his debut album My Luck, My Love, recorded as a high school project and released on 250 cassettes. His official debut, Safe Away (1998), laid the groundwork for a prolific career. Witmer’s subsequent albums, including Of Joy and Sorrow (2001), Philadelphia Songs (2002), and Are You a Dreamer? (2005), earned critical acclaim, especially Are You a Dreamer?, produced by Don Peris and featuring Sufjan Stevens.

Witmer’s collaboration with Stevens continued on The Ones Who Wait (2012), his first release on Stevens’ Asthmatic Kitty Records, followed by the self-titled Denison Witmer (2013) and American Foursquare (2020). Alongside his music, Witmer has balanced a successful carpentry business, building custom furniture and kitchens for recording studios. His Mennonite upbringing and utilitarian work ethic influence his music and craftsmanship, blending personal experience with universally relatable themes.

Witmer’s new album, Anything At All, releases in February 2025 on Asthmatic Kitty Records. Produced by Sufjan Stevens, the album promises a fresh take on Witmer’s signature sound, blending introspective songwriting with Stevens’ distinctive production style.
