“I wrote this album specifically to release it the night before my 30th birthday. It was meant to be a time capsule as to “where I was” in life. Looking back, it was such a remarkable time for being a broke musician in Brooklyn. Fellow Crooner, Thomas Bryan Eaton, and I lived together in Bushwick. We performed in each other’s bands, other people’s bands- it was a free-for-all of experimentation and warehouse parties and scraping by like kings.
The Sutras drummer, Jeremy, had a small house on the beach in Westhampton, NY. I got all the guys together from the Sutras and The Crooners to spend a week at the house to work out my new batch of songs. All the furniture came out of the house and amps, and keyboards and all manner of recording gear was carried in. We would swim in the bracing June Atlantic in the morning and then record throughout the day and night. It lived up to the romantic notion it conjured.
I finished tracking in AJ’s basement in Ithaca, NY. Matt Saccucimorano, who had recorded and produced The Sutras’ records mixed and mastered the record at Electric Wilburland- a converted old country church not far from Ithaca. I performed the record in it’s entirety with a seven-piece band at Union Pool on June 28, 2019. “ -Denton
