'What I’ve written. What I’ve said' - the meaning of Derasae.
Born in Louth, Ireland to Nigerian parents and spending his teenage years in Bolton, Derasae (formerly known as Phoenix Jones) established himself as an artist in Manchester, gaining notoriety due to his brazen lyricism, earthshaking instrumentals and electric performances.
His musical journey began at age 15, producing in his bedroom, drawing inspiration from the likes of <a href="spotify:artist:3x3jSlhyv5CiCZDZlaTq0M" data-name="Pi’erre Bourne">Pi’erre Bourne</a>, <a href="spotify:artist:0iEtIxbK0KxaSlF7G42ZOp" data-name="Metro Boomin">Metro Boomin</a> and <a href="spotify:artist:5K4W6rqBFWDnAN6FQUkS6x" data-name="Kanye West">Kanye West</a>. At 18 he took his lyrical ability seriously, starting to rap on his own beats. After releasing multiple EP’s and mixtapes, he released his 17-track album Young Picasso in 2024.
In early 2025, he rebranded from Phoenix Jones, donning the moniker Derasae, inspired by his Igbo name ‘Chukwudera’. Since then he has released multiple singles, '<a href="spotify:album:7z5b6nJ2TZuXwLbPcP3CYf" data-name="Seaux Much Steez">Seaux Much Steez</a>' (a collaborative project with <a href="spotify:artist:1ym5YxLhxNhPyBqAZX5eI1" data-name="Seauxgood">Seauxgood</a>) and '<a href="spotify:album:1Yq209wP60bkH4rH6Nq0iv" data-name="sexy guitar music">sexy guitar music</a>' (an R&B inspired EP).
Striving to always present his most authentic self through his music, he is currently working on his next album ‘NUKLEAR’, a step forward in his discography aiming to embody boundless energy.
With the rapid rise of the UK’s underground rap scene, Derasae’s attention to detail conceptually and self-sufficient production quality make him a standout artist in the UK’s shifting alternative hip-hop landscape, and undoubtedly one to watch for years to come.
