Dire Gnome is a 4-piece whose recipe is equal parts, jazz, blues, psych, garage, hard rock and metal. Songs like Phylactery Factory will lull you into a sense of security with a soft groove only to uproot you with a blistering stretch of black metal and leave you wondering how you got there in the first place. All music is written, rehearsed, and recorded in the small home studio of Nathan and Krisha Retherford by Nathan. The music often engages the issues of 21st century living through the veil of fantasy, weaving in and out from our world, established fantasy universes, and a universe created by Nathan himself. The bands debut album, Homebrew, and their follow up release, Oversteeped and Understrained, follow Colonel Mustard, a fictional gnome who struggles with The Lich King of Xantimar who has somehow taken over his body and is destroying the world he once knew and loved. The lines blur between fiction and reality as our protagonist endeavors to rid himself of this personal plague. As the music weaves a rich tapestry of varying themes and musical styles, we're left staring at a 1.5 hour stretch of a musical saga that embodies the vision of Dire Gnome. Each thread is as engaging and different as the next and suggests a complex and intricate future for this Oklahoma based band.
