Don Omar

Don Omar, also known as "El Rey" and "King of Kings," is a preeminent figure in the reggaeton movement. Born as William Omar Landrón on February 10, 1978 in Villa Palmeras, Puerto Rico, he began developing his deep insights into the human soul and performance abilities through his early involvement in church, where he served as a preacher. He later transitioned from the church to music, aligning his gifts with the burgeoning reggaeton genre sweeping through Puerto Rico.

Under the mentorship of Héctor el Bambino (aka Héctor el Father), Omar ventured into the world of music production and songwriting. He then transitioned to vocal work, featuring on the song "A la Reconquista." By 2002, he was making waves as a solo artist with popular tracks like "Desde Que Llego."

His debut album, "The Last Don," released in 2003, marked a turning point for the reggaeton genre. Omar's distinct style, steeped in socially conscious lyrics and melodious hooks, set him apart from his contemporaries. His songs resonated especially with sociopolitical-minded Latinos, breaking barriers and encouraging crucial conversations within the community.

Omar also demonstrated his ability to dominate the party scene with tracks like "Reggaeton Latino," one of the genre's first crossover hits that topped both the Top Latin Albums and Latin Pop Albums charts. His biggest success, however, came with the 2010 release of "Danza Kuduro," which amassed over 1.3 billion streams on Spotify.

Despite announcing retirement plans in 2017, Omar released "Ramayana," a collaborative track with Farruko, which paved the way for 2019's "The Last Album." The artist later surprised fans by releasing another full-length album, "Sociedad Secreta," in 2020.

His commitment to uplifting his community through secular music earned him recognition as the revolutionary among reggaeton leaders. While other artists focused on commercial success, Omar channelled his energies towards the betterment of his people. His contributions to the genre and influence translated into phenomenal success, with his songs collectively garnering over 8.0 billion streams on Spotify.
