Dr. Chonk & The Nature Injection formed out of Bristol’s tangled jazz underground, pulling musicians from Snazzback, Cousin Kula, Kudu Blue and Tamasene into one sun-baked project. What began as loose late-night jams became a band with a crooked personality and a taste for the raw, dusty feel of ’70s psych-jazz and library funk.
Their sound lives in a world of dry drum breaks, wandering basslines and keyboards that hum like old electrics left out in the heat. You can hear traces of Azymuth, Cortex and Mulatu, but everything is filtered through a Bristol mindset that favours grit over polish. The grooves aren’t rushed or manicured — they sprawl, settle and find their own strange balance.
On stage, the band keeps things direct: no spectacle, no overstatement, just players who trust the groove and each other. Audiences slide into the pocket quickly because the music leaves space for them. Dr. Chonk & The Nature Injection are carving out their own corner of UK jazz — warm, dusty, off-centre and unmistakably theirs.
