Formed in the USA during 1986, Dr. Mastermind was part of a new wave of guitar-orientated rock bands. Comprising Kurt James (ex-Steeler and Driver guitarist), Deen Castronovo (drums) and the enigmatic Dr. Mastermind (widely believed to be Matt McCourt; ex-Wild Dogs) on bass and vocals, they were a power trio in every sense of the word. Frenetically paced songs, which never quite degenerated into tuneless thrash, were punctuated by high-octane and complex guitar breaks. After the release of their debut album, Castronovo joined Cacophony, and James left for Turbin. Rick Hosert and Pete Lachman were drafted in as replacements on drums and guitar, respectively, but this new line-up failed to find success.
