Their initials an acronym for ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels’ (in itself not a million miles away from the moniker adopted by thrash band DRI - Dirty Rotten Imbeciles), DRS were, predictably, a gangsta soul quintet. However, when Pic, Blunt, Endo, Deuce Deuce and Jail Bait finished with the hard-nosed rhymes, they offered a surprising, and by no means unwelcome, line in close harmony a cappella. Their early inroads into the R&B charts were credited largely to this; it was something of a novelty to hear such down-and-dirty reality tales sung rather than spat out. Based in Los Angeles, their debut album took its title from the preferred burial mode of their local gangster homeboys. The production company associated with the album, Roll Wit It Entertainment, boasted Hammer as a silent partner.
