I'm a blues player at heart, but spent a long period studying and playing jazz.
Self-taught initially, I grew up transfixed by a friend's extensive blues record collection. I then studied and taught for many years at the UK's biggest guitar school, The Guitar Institute in London, and later was lucky enough to study at Berklee College of Music, with many of the world's finest jazz educators, including the incredible David Tronzo.
I've been a professional musician for over 25 years now, playing every gig imaginable from tiny cafes through to the O2 Arena in London. I had a long period of playing freelance jazz standards gigs and original contemporary jazz with my own bands in the UK, and in the US played regularly with renowned (some would say infamous!) Boston powerhouse jazz and blues singer Ellen O'Brien.
Since moving to NZ, in recent years I've focused on developing my own voice with my slide guitar playing, and making a return to those blues roots. I've gigged regularly in a classy and quirky jazz/blues duo, and have had the opportunity most years to perform with Auckland Symphony Orchestra.
Some thoughts on the new EP (I Could) Watch You Forever:
This introspective collection of music is a snapshot in time. It’s about life and love. A mix of reflection and the visceral. The slide is brutal and unforgiving, but it allows a direct line to the soul.
