Twenty years ago, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Earl Patrick’s life changed forever when a diving accident left him temporarily paralyzed. After years of recovery, his journey became one of resilience, love, and personal growth, shaping his music and life philosophy.
For his new album, Smooth Runs The Water—his seventh overall—Patrick revisits the music that first inspired him to pick up a guitar as a teen. This intimate collection of ten cover songs features just his voice and guitar, captured in single takes. Despite ongoing challenges, his playing is both precise and emotive, spanning folk, bluegrass, and pop across decades.
Patrick’s artistic career has taken him through New York, Nashville, and Boston, performing as part of church, jazz, and classical ensembles. He earned a scholarship to Berklee College of Music and graduated summa cum laude. His compositions have been featured in film projects by Michael Pope and Andy Mingo, with music used in trailers for Lidia Yuknavitch’s memoir A Chronology of Water, now optioned for a film directed by Kristen Stewart.
Raised in rural Oregon, Patrick was shaped by the folk revival of the 1960s. Today, he performs songs that resonate deeply with the experiences of time, change, and resilience. Sessions for Smooth Runs The Water took place late at night in his family’s home, offering a raw and honest look at the music that has defined his life.
