Eduardo Polonio (1941–2024) was a Spanish composer and a pioneer of electroacoustic music in Spain. Born in Madrid, he left his engineering studies to enroll at the Royal Conservatory of Music, where he earned a degree in Composition in 1968. During his early career, he attended the Darmstadt Summer Courses and, with a scholarship from the Juan March Foundation, pursued studies at the Institute of Psychoacoustics and Electronic Music in Ghent.
Polonio was a member of pivotal groups such as KOAN and ALEA Música Electrónica Libre, Spain's first ensemble dedicated to live electroacoustic music. From the 1970s onward, his work focused almost entirely on electroacoustic media, incorporating tape recordings, synthesizers, real-time processing, and interdisciplinary collaborations with visual and performing artists.
Over his career, Polonio created more than 50 works, including three electroacoustic operas. He served as president of the Spanish Electroacoustic Music Association and received the Magisterium of the Bourges International Electroacoustic Music Grand Prize. After moving to Huelva in 1996, he founded initiatives such as the Diáfano studio and the "Confluencias" cycle. His legacy includes an extensive discography spanning over four decades, reflecting his lasting impact on contemporary music and the evolution of electroacoustic art.
