Carr studied at Auckland University as well as at the GSM in London and with <a href="spotify:artist:4LXxsm5BF85PWnQ1dUDAze">Orff</a> at the Munich Hochschule für Musik. He has won many prizes, including first prize at the Auckland Festival for the overture Mardi Gras and the Harriet Cohen International Music Award. A commission from the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation resulted in his Piano Concerto. After 1961, Carr exclusively composed with twelve-tone serial methods.
