Eila Pöllänen is a singer, multi-instrumentalist and composer from Finland and Karelia. She often sings in minority languages and portrays the lives and struggles of individuals belonging to minority groups.
Since the 1990s, Eila has been actively engaged in the survival and revitalization of the Karelian language by organizing courses, exhibitions and culture events. She has also released six CD-albums in the Karelian language, the first one came out 2003. In 2002 she won the world championship in runic song for her innovative ways of using an ancient Kalevala singing tradition.
In 2019, Eila released Hierun tulet ("The Lights of a Village") also on Spotify, an album with songs in Karelian and Finnish. The album was followed by "Min längtans fågel", her very first EP with songs in Swedish. Her 7th album, "Unen Rajalla" ("On the Verge of Sleep"), was released in 2023 and shared fragments of the life stories of minorities; Swedish-Finnish, Karelian, Kven people and Ingrian Finns. Her latest release is "Missä on minun runoni?", released February 2024, is a modern runic song that explores the importance of one's mother tongue and the feelings that may arise if the connection to that language becomes more distant or dissolves.
