Elisabeth Lohninger is an Austrian born jazz vocalist whose velvety alto and boundary crossing artistry have drawn comparisons to “the Kate Bush of Jazz”. After growing up singing folk songs in a tiny alpine village and honing her craft in Vienna, she moved to New York in 1994 and has since released fifteen albums, including the critically acclaimed Life Lines (2020) and Ballads in Blue (2015), with praise from The New York Times, Jazz Times, All About Jazz and Jazzthing. A respected faculty member at the New School for Jazz for two decades, she collaborates regularly with pianist and husband Walter Fischbacher. Her latest project, Queen Goes Jazz, is her adventurous 15th album and concert program: here she reinterprets iconic Queen anthems (“We Are the Champions”) and deep cuts (“Cool Cat”) with a razor focus on lyrics and essence, offering fresh, surprising takes that highlight her dark, expressive voice as the perfect foil to Freddie Mercury’s flamboyance.
