Years ago, adrift in the vast musical ocean of sidemen, sessions, and the endless whirlpool of gigs that sucks in musicians, Bassist Dwayne Lau and Guitarist Sean Cunnington set out on a journey to break the cycle. Eventually, the two missing pieces were found. The Thunder - Scott Apted on drums -- and the Voice - Tommy Blacknine -completed the quartet. From the first downbeat a mighty rumbling began: thus, was born Elmwood Underground.
Obvious from their first single --"Somebody Else Will"-- Elmwood Underground draws heavily on their Blues/Rock influences mixed with crafty pop inflections. Don't be fooled though as they easily travel through Dwayne's Trinidad/Reggae roots, Scott's Southern Rock grooves, and Sean's vast musical vocabulary culled from many years in the “hired-gun” world. Tommy's gritty yet soulful voice stitches everything together.
The group's upcoming first full length release -These, Them's and Those -- was recorded during a year-long period in Cunnington's studio west of Toronto. Cunnington, a songwriter, producer, and session guitarist, also recorded, produced and mixed this release.
"The hidden gem of experience is diversity" says Cunnington when referring to Elmwood Underground’s no-holds-barred approach to writing and recording. "After years of playing other artists' music we had nothing of our own to show for it". Now they do!
So, crank it up and enjoy 'These, Them's and Those!". There's definitely more to come from Elmwood Underground.
