Barraine studied composition, harmony and fugue at the Paris Conservatoire. She served as Chef du Chant for the RTF from 1936-39 and participated in The Front National des Musiciens during WWII. Her compositions create tension and are often tragic. She is considered to be one of the most gifted French composers since Lili Boulanger.
