Artist Statement:
Steve’s Empire is a collection of music written and rendered between 2003 and 2013. As a collection, it has no genre, and individually the songs are difficult to clearly classify. It’s dance music, but it’s not. It’s jazz, but it’s not. It’s hip hop, but it’s not. It’s ambient, but it’s not. Let me be clear, it’s not any of those genres in a commonly understood way. The easiest way to understand it is to say that it’s different for every person. This music encourages you to pay attention to your own thoughts. It creates unusual conversation. It’s the kind of music you play when you’re comfortable with someone. It’s subtly and deliberately imperfect. I believe in the importance of abstract and reflective critical thought, and this music is designed to provide vivid ambience for the mind to consider.
