Based in Montreal, Empty Nesters is the solo recording project of Chinese/Vietnamese-Canadian artist Eric Liao. Drawing from hardcore-punk, shoegaze, dreampop, and post-punk influences. The sound has taken a sharp turn into hardcore-punk with Liao's latest EP 'Deaf Monks'; raw, urgent, and uncompromising. Known for pushing boundaries and challenging expectations, Empty Nesters has brought this evolving sound to stages across Canada and the U.S., including sets at Pop Montreal, and New Colossus Festival.
Written during a period of burnout and transition, the EP dives headfirst into themes of identity, stagnation, and survival in a world that often feels like it’s closing in. It’s also Liao’s most collaborative project to date: Shangri-Nah was mixed by Shae Brossard at Hotel2Tango, who also mentored Liao through mixing the rest of the EP himself. Matthew Galamaga brings the heartbeat on drums, while a lineup of genre-defying features: @Sasha Cay, @Ribbon Skirt, Victor Complex, @Fraud Perry, and @Clay Pigeon inject fresh perspectives into the hardcore format.
