The first song I ever wrote was about a boy in Cubs Scouts that I had a crush on at 7 years old. From what I remember, some of my excellent lyricism included things like comparing us to ‘bread rolls with feta’. Despite the song winning my schools ‘After School Club’s Got Talent’, my muse never fancied me back. 15 years later and I’m still writing songs about boys who don’t look at me twice, but hopefully my lyrics have got slightly better.

I wrote Whiskey about a boy I never dated, never kissed, never even told that I liked at university. While I’m not saying you should ever change who you are for someone else, I think there’s something beautiful about wanting to learn and adapt to make someone happy in little ways. For instance, when I was 11, I learnt Impossible (<a href="spotify:artist:4IWBUUAFIplrNtaOHcJPRM" data-name="James Arthur">James Arthur</a> Version) on the guitar because the boy I liked at the time told me it was his favourite song. When I played it for him he was not bothered at all, but it’s the thought that counts.

I’m hoping that the world can relate to my hopeless unrequited love song and I won’t have to use my degree because I’ve spent most of my time at uni writing music so I can’t actually remember anything I’ve learnt.
