External Signal is the indie pop project of songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Maxwell Moore. Started in 2020 during covid lockdown, Moore decided to use their newly free time stuck inside to write music and start a record label. Their first release was a moody electronic cover of Gorillaz’ “Rhinestone Eyes”. The cover would shortly become a minor viral hit on Tiktok, gaining over a million plays across streaming services from word of mouth alone.
Moore is no stranger to making music. Growing up in Oklahoma, they started their first band at fifteen playing noise rock in DIY venues and house shows across Oklahoma City. In their first year of college they started producing their own music and released a synth pop project that would take inspiration from PS1 and N64 era video games. Their first self-written single “Nonbiney” feels like the natural progression of their work up to this point. The earworm chorus melody and distorted guitars find them influenced by the noise pop bands they grew up with. Meanwhile the autotuned and catchy vocals are at home with Moore’s indie pop contemporaries. At the heart of the song is Moore’s vulnerable lyrics about their gender expression through clothes, hair, and more.
“I wanted to make music that felt genuinely like myself in every aspect of the song,” said Moore about the single. “With ‘Nonbiney’ I accomplished that goal. It’s loud, messy, fun, and emotional.”
“Nonbiney” is available digitally May 11th via Bug Body Records.
