Dual Citizen was crafted to show my vulnerability and tell my listeners, “Tough people go through pain.”
Pain is inevitable in life. It’s something we all must learn to live with. Something one of my childhood friend couldn’t handle any more; and so he took his own life.
I always viewed him as the strongest amongst our little four man crew back then. Both physically & mentally. The kind of guy that you thought, “nothing could ever get to him.” Never could’ve imagined he would take his own.
I kept thinking, what about me? Me that always doubted myself, my abilities, my potential, my purpose. Me that shields my sadness and hides my scars from the world.
I remembered all the days that I thought about saying my final goodbye, and the strength and resilience it took to lift myself out of that darkness; the mental weight I hold knowing that there is so much more ahead.
I just wish I could’ve told him he was never alone. I wish I could have told him to fight on. Stand this battleground with the rest of us. Till we are all old and wrinkled with battle scars that matched, laughing at the pains we wished never were, while preparing for the few that still lay ahead.
This album is to tell anyone who feels like saying their final goodbyes, STAY ALIVE. Because beyond all the pain and darkness our minds and bodies face on the daily; there is love. We may not see it all the time. But there is love.
