Folks Cinematic Jazz Ensemble is a Jazz Sextet pursuing jazz music with cinematic visual images in Japan. The debut album, written as a soundtrack for a fictional road movie, is released in September 2019. Musically, Folks marries the improvisation of jazz with various other styles of music, for example, reggae, rock, folk, and chill out etc under the direction of Shouhei Matsushita a.k.a M-Swift (Irma Records / Italy, Freestyle Records/U.K.). This project features some of the finest jazz musicians in Tokyo, joined by London-based photographer Nemo Roberts. Each song is related to Nemo’s photographs. Not just music, not just photography, both arts are collaborating in a more closely-connected way expressing the story of a fictional movie. Folks is a group ultimately seeking a new art form.
