Forrest, the Lexington, Kentucky born instrumental post-sludge outfit, was formed by lead guitarist Riley Logan and drummer Josh Summerville in 2017; they would soon recruit Jared McIntyre on bass guitar and about a year into its lifetime, Charlie Overman on rhythm guitar and keys. Having morphed from an instrumental progressive rock group, Navajo Tahoe, into Forrest, its founders kept the prog rock core, but added their own brand of heavy, spacey sludginess to it. Overtime their writing style has evolved, drawing influence from a variety of bands ranging from Deftones to Melvins to Jethro Tull, while still maintaining a certain uniqueness that makes the group hard to liken to anything else.
