A modern master of the banjo, Frank Evans blends innovation and tradition with a style that feels both exciting and intuitive. Now based in Nashville, Tennessee, Evans is an accomplished performer, educator, and recording artist whose work has helped shape the newest generation of traditional music.
Originally from Toronto, Canada, Evans discovered the banjo at a young age and immersed himself in the music of Lower Appalachia. Mentored by Canadian banjoist Chris Coole, he won the Clifftop Youth Banjo Contest at age 13 and later became the first banjo player to study at Humber College of Music.
While at Humber, Evans joined the Slocan Ramblers, who received the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Momentum Award in 2020, earned a Juno Award nomination in 2019, were named Ensemble of the Year at the 2023 Canadian Folk Music Awards, and made their Grand Ole Opry debut in 2024.
Since moving to Nashville in 2019, Evans has performed with Old Crow Medicine Show, Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway, Bronwyn Keith-Hynes, Trey Hensley, and Jason Carter. A sought-after session musician, he appears on recordings by Natalie MacMaster, Sierra Hull, Michael Cleveland, and others.
Equally respected as an educator, Evans teaches internationally and has been on staff at RockyGrass Academy, Midwest Banjo Camp, and more. His 2022 collaboration Madison Archives received a Juno nomination and won Traditional Roots Album of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards
