The music of this violin virtuoso and Konzertmeister gained wide circulation particularly between 1760 and 1780. Numerous records of performances of Schwindl's works attest to their popularity, In 1772 a concert opened with two of Schwindl's symphonies and the Elector, with whom he was employed, played the gamba. Schwindl's symphonies were usually scored for eight parts -- four strings, two woodwinds and two horns. They were arranged in both three and four movements usually following the pattern of allegro-andante-minuet and an added trio-presto. Similarly Schwindl used sonata forms both with and without recapitulations. Compositions by Schwindl demonstrate a sequential development in time; as he continued to compose his use of harmonic progressions matured. He employed the use of greater control and enigmatic themes and even went so far as to rework some of his earlier symphonies further demonstrating his growth. Schwindl served in numerous positions including Konzertmeister in Wied-Runkel, virtuoso da camera to the count of Colloredo, first violinist to Prince William V of Orange and Konzertmeister for the Margrave of Karlsruhe. ~ Keith Johnson, Rovi
