Guitarist and composer Gijs Idema grew up in The Hague and studied at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and the Manhattan School of Music. Gijs plays with musical extremes and he is always searching for new ways to balance composition and improvisation. Elements in his playing include lyricism, rhythmic bursts, rich harmonies and meditative silences. Bands that Gijs leads include the Gijs Idema Trio, Idema/ Serierse Quartet and his solo project. The past year he released ‘’Motus’’ with the Idema/ Serierse Quartet, which was nominated for an Edison Award. Other releases include his first solo album ‘’Marking Time’’ as well as the follow-up album ‘’Shaping Time’’, which features Gijs’ compositions for string quartet. In the past he won the Expression of Art Award (2018), Keep an Eye The Records (2020) and the Conservatorium Talent Award (2020)
