b. Birmingham, West Midlands, England. The debut album of this harsh-voiced rapper from Birmingham, England, combined the geographically strong tradition of reggae with funk and soul samples. The most effective track on 1992’s Brothers Of The Jungle Zone was ‘Push It Along’, which employed the widely imitated ‘shuffling’ drum pattern from Massive Attack’s ‘Daydreaming’. Although lyrically astute, the rest of the album’s tracks, especially ‘State Of Self-Decline’, were too obviously redolent of west coast gangsta rappers such as Ice-T and Ice Cube. In the light of poor sales MCA Records chose not to renew Gilly G.’s contract.
