While he lived, the fame of Giovanni Antonio Guido came from his virtuoso violin playing more than from his skills as a composer. As a violinist, he served in the court of the Duke of Orleans, once performing a concert before the Queen of England while in his service. Guido also received acclaim for his playing at the Concert Spirituel in 1728 and rose to the rank of master of music (1726) while supported by the Duke of Orleans in his orchestra. Only a few compositions are attributed to Guido. Accreditation is difficult as he employed the use of the surname Guido and Antonio. However, his music does reflect both his Italian upbringing and his French professional career.
