b. Gitte Haenning, 29 July 1946, Copenhagen, Denmark. Intended for a showbusiness career from birth, this vocalist’s first single - a duet with her songwriting father - was issued in 1954, and she began recording as a soloist for Germany’s Electrola-Columbia label in 1960 - though she would sometimes team up with Rex Gildo, a ‘teenage star less prominent in the West German and Scandinavian hit parades. Gitte’s fame touched its apogee in 1963 when she won the televised German Song Festival with ‘Ich Will Einen Cowboy Als Mann (I Want To Marry A Cowboy)’ (composed by Nils Nobach and Rudy von den Dovenmuhle). This was ensconced at number 1 in the national chart for nearly two months, selling over a million copies by 1965.
