The retro-indie sound of Glossies is percolated in the Echo Park bedroom of songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist, Erich Tomkinson. He fills it with vinyl, cassettes and posters of Harry Nillson and late solo era Paul McCartney, and his growing collection of vintage gear plus whichever quirky little 80’s synth he’s most recently stumbled across. As an afterthought he squeezes a mattress in the corner and some clothes in the remaining walk-in-robe space around his drum kit. Over sleepless nights and weekends he pours nostalgic sounds onto tape, eventually distilling it all into catchy but quirky indie-pop tracks like those on the Glossies debut, “Cactus What You Peach”. Erich’s music is carefully crafted, but left unpolished and honest, allowing the idiosyncrasies and nuances of his style to feature. As stated in the song “Popular” - 'I don’t have a disguise/You can take or you leave it, you just might even be surprised.'
The band originally formed in Santa Barbara in 2016 as Erich was releasing his true debut album “Industria” under the band’s original name, Dot Plaza. The name referred to the tiny half-garage conversion that he first squeezed all his gear into (plus a bed, just.) This building was entirely washed away in the Montecito mudslides of 2018, prompting Erich to retire the name in respect to the tragic event, which he only avoided due to his move to Los Angeles weeks earlier.
