Producer, guitarist, and speech-language pathologist Garrett Oyama – known to music lovers as Go Yama – is on an quest to explore life’s biggest mysteries through creation. Delivering a catalogue of playfully catchy, and menacingly heavy beats since 2012, the Los Angeles-based artist bridges the musical gamut of influences ranging from Joe Hisaishi to J Dilla.

Cultivating one of the most unique sounds to emerge from the SoundCloud generation beat scene, Oyama’s talent has made him a treasured collaborator for the likes of Mike Gao, Flamingosis, Elaquent, and Kaelin Ellis. Even moreso, his versatility with the six strings has allowed him to share stages around the world with artists of all styles such as starRo, Joyce Wrice, and Chon.

Most recently, Oyama’s interest has been drawn toward the concept of awe. Between his work with kids as an SLP, a stint living in his ancestral homeland of Japan, and the inevitable perspective that comes with time, the ever-curious creator found a new challenge: narrative storytelling. Inspired by the writings of psychology professor Dacher Keltner, Oyama developed his next project, a novel and accompanying original soundtrack created to inspire children to keep hold of their capacity for awe and wonder. To pursue this new challenge, Oyama would partner with friend and longtime musical collaborator Paul Chin to launch a new label Sanzuwu Group, through which the forthcoming literature/music project “Rumi” is slated to be released in 2025.
